In 2022, the NFL announced it was putting forward $1 million in funding to investigate the use of cannabinoids in the treatment of concussions and for alternative pain management. One of those research projects has just received approval from Health Canada and is about to begin recruiting participants. There is an urgent need for new preventative therapeutics for athletes at risk of repetitive head injuries and it is hoped that cannabinoids could meet that need. I spoke to Dr Patrick Neary at the University of Regina who is leading the study.
