Do You Change Your Diet with the Seasonal Transitions? Figs, pomegranates, and apples, oh my! Do you notice the change in market offerings with the shifting of the seasons? Around late August through October, I notice the change in supply at the markets, and I also start to see plenty of houses with blossoming pear, apple, and fig trees. It’s always such a pleasure! Since my apartment life reduces me to house plants, I’m always excited to see abundant fruit trees growing on the properties of my neighbors. Below, are some of my favorite fruits from the summer/fall harvest and a few of their benefits. I love how they do a great job of prepping our immune system for the season ahead. Also, our guts need diversity in order to best support our overall health, so it’s important to switch things up and eat according to nature’s cycles. 4 Common Fruits in Abundance During the Fall Apples: they’re high in water and fiber content; to get most of the fiber benefits from apples, eat them with the skin on. Their fiber content aids in reducing cholesterol, so they’re great for heart health. They also contain polyphenols, which have antioxidant effects. We could always use more antioxidant support! Pomegranates: Filled with little ruby-like seeds, pomegranates are also packed with fiber and antioxidants. They have powerful anti-inflammatory effects which are helpful in reducing heart disease and gut illnesses. This nutritious fruit is also great for those looking to lower blood pressure and fight arthritis and joint pain (due to inflammation). Persimmons: these particularly seasonal fruits are rich invitamin C, which is exactly what’s needed as the weather transitions into the fall. Vitamin C aids in boosting immunity and even helps with reproductive health. Given our bodies don’t produce vitamin C, it’s important that we increase our intake of this critical nutrient! ALSO – persimmons offer more than HALF your daily needed intake of vitamin A, so go and get your hands on these bad boys while you can! Pears: Similar to apples, pears pack a lot of fiber content and include essential nutrients such as folate, magnesium, vitamin C, and vitamin K. Their lutein and vitamin A components also introduce antioxidant effects into the body and help you fight/eliminate free radicals. These are just a few of the extremely beneficial fruits you can find in the markets to help prepare your body for rest and retreat during the fall. Nature provides the medicine to help us prepare for upcoming challenges and to also fight them off when they arrive!
